Semax & Selank: What Real Users Say About Effects, Doses and Stacking Them
We read about 780 first-hand Semax and Selank stories from Reddit and forums. Here is what people say they felt, the doses and cycles they describe, and what went wrong.
By Amrita Peptides · Updated
Semax and Selank are two short peptides developed in Russia that have built a big following in online nootropic communities. Ask about them on Reddit and you get everything from "life changing" to "may as well be water". We wanted to know which of those stories is typical, so we read them.
The short version: people mostly describe Semax as a quiet focus and clarity aid, and Selank as something that "takes the edge off" anxiety without feeling sedated. Many combine the two so that, as one user put it, Selank relieves "the potential agitation of semax". But a large share of people feel nothing at all, and a smaller group report anxiety, low mood or headaches. Nothing below is proven, and none of it is medical advice.
Read this first: this is internet talk, not science
This guide summarises what people say online. It is not a study, and it should not be read as one.
- We read about 780 first-hand experience stories in 143 discussion threads, mostly on Reddit (r/Nootropics, r/NooTopics, r/Peptides, r/Biohackers and similar) plus Longecity and a few other forums. Most were posted between 2022 and 2026; a smaller set of older forum posts goes back as far as 2005.
- We only counted people describing their own use. Questions, plans, second-hand stories ("my friend tried…") and obvious advertising, such as copy-pasted "PM me for a source" replies and vendor cheat sheets, were left out.
- Nobody checked what was really in anyone's vial or spray, whether they had a diagnosis, or what else they were taking. Many were also using caffeine, ADHD medication, antidepressants or other peptides at the same time.
- People who have a strong experience, good or bad, are far more likely to post than people who felt little. The percentages below describe these posts, not how likely anything is to happen to you.
The doses and schedules in this guide are what users report doing. They are community habits, not protocols proven by science. Semax and Selank are sold here for laboratory research use only. For what the published laboratory literature actually shows, read our Semax vs Selank research comparison.
Semax and Selank in one minute
Semax is built on a small fragment of ACTH, a hormone involved in stress signalling, without the part that tells the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Online it is talked about as the "focus" peptide.
Selank is built on tuftsin, a tiny fragment of an immune protein. Online it is the "calm" peptide.
Both come from the same Russian institute, and in Russia both are registered as medicines in nasal-drop form. That is a big part of why they get mentioned together, and why so many people try them as a pair.
How the stories break down
Scroll horizontally to see all columns
| Outcome people described | Semax (331 stories) | Selank (292 stories) | Both together (156 stories) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mostly positive | 48% | 56% | 66% |
| Mixed: real benefits plus real downsides | 18% | 14% | 10% |
| Mostly negative | 8% | 14% | 10% |
| Felt nothing or almost nothing | 26% | 15% | 13% |
Two things stand out. First, "nothing happened" is extremely common for Semax: about one in four people. Second, Selank has more clearly negative stories than Semax, which surprises people who expect a "calming" peptide to be the gentle one.
The combination looks best on paper. That is probably partly because people who did not like Semax or Selank on its own rarely go on to try both, so the stack stories come from a friendlier group.
Semax: what people say it feels like
The words that come up again and again are focus, clarity, and getting started on things. The typical good report is not a buzz. It is more like the mental fog lifting.
- "Semax helps me just stop procrastinating and get shit done." (r/Peptides)
- "I don't feel wired or stimulated" (r/BodyHackGuide)
- "Lasted all day: focus, clarity, decent mood boost." (r/Nootropics)
Most mentioned benefits: focus (about 1 in 5 stories), mental clarity, better mood, more energy, easier word-finding and recall, and motivation. Students, people with ADHD-type symptoms and people doing demanding desk work are the most common posters. ADHD users also make up a good share of the "did nothing" stories.
When people notice it: with nasal spray, many describe something within 5 to 45 minutes. Others only noticed a difference after one to three weeks of daily use. Reported effects last anywhere from "about 3 hours" to "all day", and six to eight hours is a common answer.
Most mentioned downsides:
- Feeling nothing. The single most common complaint, including people who tried higher amounts, injections and the N-acetyl versions. One long-time skeptic: "Absolutely nothing and I've megadosed both from multiple sources".
- Anxiety, edginess or irritability, often worse with caffeine or ADHD stimulants. "Higher doses leave me irritable when I'm interrupted".
- Fading effect. Several people felt it strongly for a few days, then not at all: "I only felt something the first 3 days then after that the next 2 weeks i didn't feel a single thing".
- Poor sleep, headaches, a dip in mood after stopping, and occasionally tiredness rather than alertness.
- Emotional flatness. Rare, but a few detailed stories: "Semax made me feel like a robot in a similar way to Adderall." (r/Nootropics)
Hair loss comes up as a worry in many threads. In the stories we read, we did not find a convincing first-hand case where Semax alone was the likely cause.
Selank: what people say it feels like
The most common description is calm without feeling drugged. The volume on anxious thoughts goes down, while the head stays clear. Nearly half of all Selank stories mention calmness.
- "Selank felt like a very low dose benzo for me. Like very very low dose" (r/Peptides)
- "It's not Xanax. It's subtle but does provide some relief for me." (r/Peptidesource)
- "I easily hold eye contact and can make small talk no problem!" (r/NooTopics)
- "Its value for me is in reducing fear and calming my dream landscape, not sedation." (r/NooTopics)
Most mentioned benefits: calm, better mood, easier social situations, less rumination and better sleep. Social anxiety, everyday worry and "racing mind at night" are the typical reasons people try it. Some use it only before stressful events such as presentations.
When people notice it: often 10 to 30 minutes after a dose. Some only noticed it after a week or more, which makes it hard to tell from placebo. Effects are usually described as lasting three to five hours. "My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to last more than 5 hours..."
Most mentioned downsides:
- Paradoxical anxiety. The most common complaint after "nothing happened". "I thought its calming but for me its the opposite, just pure stress." (r/NootropicsHelp) Some describe panic, a tight chest or a racing heart.
- Low mood. A recurring group of stories describe feeling flat or depressed, sometimes for days after stopping. "I ended up missing a day of work bc I couldn't get out of bed." (r/NooTopics)
- Headaches, occasionally severe, and drowsiness, often at higher amounts.
- Feeling nothing. "Selank is weird. It doesn't feel like anything." Some of these people are happy about it, because the anxiety is simply quieter. Others think they wasted their money.
A handful of people describe a single bad reaction that took weeks to fade. These are rare in the data, but they are written in enough detail that they are worth knowing about.
Semax + Selank together: why people stack them
The logic in almost every stack post is the same: Semax for drive, Selank for calm. People hope Selank will soften the edginess some get from Semax, leaving "calm focus".
- "The potential agitation of semax was relieved with selank, leaving a more focused and calm sense of being." (r/StackAdvice)
- "I was laser focused for a solid 8 1/2 hours." (r/Biohacking)
- "Words come easy and anxiety melts away." A public speaker using both (r/PeptidePathways).
The most detailed comparison we found came from someone injecting both. When they dropped Selank and kept Semax, irritability and "tunnel vision" came back. When they lowered the Semax amount, that eased.
But the stack is not a guaranteed fix:
- "I tried the blend and was non-functional 3 days in a row." (r/Biohacking)
- "The sleep was ass during the whole time just a lot of crazy dreams." (r/Nootropics)
- "Neither feel consistent to me" (r/Biohacking)
The most common stack complaint is drowsiness or feeling sluggish, followed by anxiety that Selank did not cancel out. One person who took Selank at more than about 200 mcg explained: "anymore was making me feel groggy and too sedate".
What doses and schedules people describe
This is the section most readers come for, so to repeat: these are numbers people post online. They are not recommendations, they have not been tested in proper human trials, and many posters were not sure what their own spray or vial actually delivered.
Here are the typical amounts in stories that gave a clear figure. Only a minority of posts did.
Scroll horizontally to see all columns
| What users report | Semax | Selank | Both together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most common route | Nasal spray; injection close behind | Nasal spray and injection about equal | Nasal or injection, often from a pre-mixed blend |
| Typical amount per dose people mention | 200–600 mcg nasal; about 500 mcg injected | 250–500 mcg | Semax 200–500 mcg + Selank 250–500 mcg |
| Usual time of day | Morning, sometimes a second dose around midday | Evening, at bedtime, or only on stressful days | Both in the morning, or Semax morning / Selank evening |
| Typical reported effect length | 3–8 hours | 3–5 hours | "All day" is common |
Some people mention far higher amounts, up to several milligrams a day. Those are outliers, and several high-dose posters were also the ones reporting no effect or bad side effects. A recurring tip in the threads is that people sensitive to anxiety did better at lower amounts, not higher.
How long people run them
There is no agreed cycle. These are the patterns that come up most:
- 2 weeks on, 1–2 weeks off. The most common Semax pattern.
- 3–4 weeks on, 1–2 weeks off. Common for both, and for the stack.
- 5 days on, 2 days off (weekdays only), often run for a month.
- Only when needed. Popular with Selank users who take it before social or stressful situations.
- Every day with no breaks. A minority. Some say it still works after years; others say it stopped working after a couple of weeks.
For comparison, the official Russian Selank nasal drops (0.15%) come with an instruction for a 14-day course that can be repeated after 1–3 weeks on medical advice (instruction). Russian Semax drops come in 0.1% and 1% strengths, with courses ranging from a few days to two weeks depending on the condition (0.1%, 1%). The Semax label also lists anxiety disorders among its contraindications. That is worth knowing, because "Semax for anxious ADHD" is common advice online.
Three kinds of story we kept seeing
The procrastinating student or desk worker. Tries Semax in the morning to get through study or deep work. Best case: "I don't feel wired or stimulated", it is just easier to start and keep going. Worst case: edgy and irritable with coffee, or nothing at all after a week. Adding Selank often comes up once the edginess appears.
The socially anxious professional. Uses Selank before meetings, dates or presentations, or in the evening to quiet a racing mind. Best case: "I can actually think while talking to others". Worst case: Selank makes them more anxious, or a week of use is followed by low mood.
The person already on ADHD medication or antidepressants. Hopes the peptides will let them rely less on their medication. The stories here are the most mixed and the hardest to read, because everything interacts. Some describe smoother stimulant comedowns; others report anxiety, odd sensations or crashes. A few posters were thinking about stopping prescribed medication on their own, and more experienced users in the same threads warned them against it.
Pros and cons at a glance
Scroll horizontally to see all columns
| Peptide | What people like | What people complain about |
|---|---|---|
| Semax | Clear-headed focus without a stimulant "buzz"; easier to start tasks; better word-finding; no appetite loss | Often does nothing; anxiety or irritability; poor sleep; effect fading after days; occasional emotional flatness |
| Selank | Calm without heavy sedation; easier conversations; quieter racing thoughts; better sleep for some | Paradoxical anxiety; low mood; headaches; drowsiness; subtle enough to feel like nothing |
| Both together | "Calm focus"; Selank smoothing Semax edginess; long-lasting effect | Sluggishness; vivid dreams or poor sleep; inconsistent from day to day; anxiety not always cancelled |
Red flags that come up in the threads
- "N-acetyl amidate" versions are not simply stronger. People describe NA-Semax and NA-Selank (sold as Adamax or Adalank) as longer-lasting for some, more edgy for others, and identical for many. They are different molecules with even less published research.
- Dose confusion. Many posts mix up mg and mcg, or count syringe "units" without stating the concentration. Copying a number from a thread without knowing what it meant is a common source of bad reactions, including one person who accidentally used ten times their intended amount.
- Mixing with medication. Stories involving SSRIs, stimulants, benzodiazepines or mood-stabiliser conditions are the most unpredictable. Many experienced posters told newcomers to talk to their doctor first, and not to stop prescribed medication on a forum's advice.
The bottom line
Read enough of these threads and a consistent picture forms. Semax is the one people reach for to think clearly and get things done. Selank is the one they reach for to feel calmer. A big share of people get little from either, and a smaller but real group feel worse. The stack has the happiest stories, but that is partly because the people telling them liked the peptides to begin with.
None of this replaces proper research, and the doses above are a record of what people do, not what anyone has shown to be safe or effective. Frequently asked questions
Are the doses in this guide recommendations?
No. They are the amounts people say they used in Reddit and forum posts. Nobody checked what was actually in their vials or sprays, and the numbers have not been tested in proper human trials. Treat them as a description of internet habits, not a protocol to follow.
Do Semax and Selank work for everyone?
No. In the stories we read, roughly one in four Semax users and about one in seven Selank users said they noticed nothing at all, even after raising the amount or switching between nasal spray and injection. Non-response is one of the most common outcomes people describe.
Does Selank cancel out Semax anxiety?
Sometimes, according to users. Several people describe Selank smoothing out the edgy or irritable feeling they got from Semax. Others say the combination made them sluggish, still anxious, or did nothing. There is no reliable rule, and no controlled study has tested this pairing in people.
How long do people usually run Semax and Selank?
The most common patterns people describe are two to four weeks on followed by one to two weeks off, or five days on and two off. Some use Selank only on stressful days. There is no agreement in the community, and no cycle has been shown to be better than another.
What are the most common complaints?
For Semax: feeling nothing, anxiety or irritability, poor sleep and headaches. For Selank: feeling nothing, paradoxical anxiety, low mood, headaches and drowsiness. A small number of people describe bad reactions that lasted days or weeks after stopping.
Is this guide based on scientific research?
No. It is a plain-language summary of what people write online. Online posts are self-selected, unverified and often mixed with other substances. For the published science, see our Semax vs Selank article, which covers the laboratory literature.
